Coqui Notes From The Principal...
I can’t believe we are in the last few weeks of another unique and challenging school year. We experienced another interrupted school year, however, we gathered together, supported our community and our students. Yet again, we have maintained our focus of educating our students while also including events to reconnect our families.
Now, the focus is on awards and celebrations of accomplishments. We are happy to welcome our parents to Awards Ceremonies held in their child’s classroom for Kindergarten through 4th Grade. Invitation letters will be sent home shortly to indicate your response of attendance. Please return the form to your child’s teacher. Fifth grade classes will split between two ceremonies at the end of May to accommodate families.
The last two days of school, Monday, June 5th and Tuesday, June 6th are Early Dismissal Days with student dismissal at 1:10 PM. Morning Coqui Club will still be open. However, Coqui Club is not available in the afternoon on early dismissal days. Please plan for your child in advance and communicate with the teacher.
We also have our Uniform Donation event kicking off on Monday, June 5th. Donations of gently used items are appreciated. There will be a uniform donation drop-off in the Café and at thebus ramp. The Early Dismissal Days are out of uniform days. The District Dress Code can be used as a guide when selecting outfits and a brief outline is below.
As we approach the end of the school year, we start to plan for the upcoming school year which includes placing students with a teacher. We would like to ask that if you do have a teacher request, that you please write a letter to the Information Specialist, Mrs. Munroe, stating the type of teacher for which your child would respond to best and not an actual teacher name. As you are aware, the zoning for our District has changed and we have a portion of new students to our school. We ask that you not request a certain teacher by name, as it makes it very difficult to balance classes and keep our class sizes in accordance with state requirements. You may write, for example, “my child works best with a very structured teacher” or “my child needs some freedom of movement and responds best to a very nurturing learning environment”.
We know that the relationships teachers and students make during the school year are critical in the child’s academic development. It is our goal to formulate classroom rosters which provide students and the teachers the best possible learning environment. Thank you in advance for honoring this school procedure for future teacher placement. After visiting each classroom multiple times, I am confident all of our teachers demonstrate excellence with instructional delivery and a true concern for the well-being of our students.
Due to an increase of expected cars for drop-off next school year, we will pilot a
two-lane drop-off beginning Monday, May 15th. There will be two lanes open for student drop off beginning at 8:30 which is a later start than our current time. The process will be the following:
1. The first set of vehicles in two lanes will stop at number one just like the afternoon pick-up.
2. A staff attendant will unload the farthest vehicle from the building first, then the closest to the building.
3. Vehicles will be dismissed by staff at pole number 1. The next set of vehicles will be held until a safe and complete two-lane set of vehicles can move forward to unload.
4. Parents must wait until a staff member opens the door. We want to keep our students safe at all times.
For obvious safety reasons, parents are asked not to park and walk their student across the crosswalk between 8:30-8:55. This also causes a delay in the drop-off line as well a safety issues for our students. All parents must follow the drop-off lanes of traffic. If parking is needed between 8:30-8:55, follow the traffic through drop-off to the small parking lot, next to Botanica Lakes, and walk your child along the walker sidewalk into the building. Thank you for your assistance with this trial to create a timely, efficient and safe student drop-off.
I look forward to seeing you at the Awards Ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of your child.
I hope you have a restful and fun-filled summer.
Mrs. Wilcken
